Yup, you read that right! This comes from a top (undisclosed) vineyard in Stags Leap AVA whose wines sell for two-three times the asking price here. This particular wine is 80% Cabernet, 10% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot and spends 10 months in 60% new oak. It clocks in at a hefty (but increasingly common) 15% abv and scored 92pts with Wine Enthusiast. Check it out!

“Bright red cherry notes blend with deeper blackberries and blueberries in this intensely fruity, pure-tasting wine. Moderate tannins and good acidity shape the genrous flavors for good balance and an appetizing texture.” 92pts

The nose here is really nice, with deep blue fruit, sun-warmed herbs, and subtle spice. On the palate, there’s dense fruit, with creamy red berries and cherries leading the way…the texture is almost chewy and the tannins are firm. This is super young and while it’s quite tasty in a hedonistic “gulp it down with a well-marbled ribeye” sort of way, it will almost certainly gain significant complexity with some time in bottle. Still..the “gulp it now with a well-marbled ribeye” thing is working pretty well for me right now! The Clos de Napa wines are supremely value-driven, ripe, rich, pleasurable wines at great prices. It still shocks me that no one else is really working with them locally…though some of my favorite places down in St. Louis are)!
