“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold . . . The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died.” I first read those words 25 years ago (give or take) in my adolescent years, and they still get me. S. E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” is one of those books that I’ll always remember from my youth, and hope to share with my kids as they grow older. Its themes of alienation, loyalty, family, love, sacrifice, and loss are timeless. So when I saw a local-ish (just the other side of St. Louis) IPA named for a character in one of my favorite novels, I had to give it a try, right?
Stay Gold is an American IPA brewed with Mosaic and Citra hops that comes in at 8% abv. It pours a slightly hazed golden straw hue with a creamy, off-white head. The nose is lightly grainy and toasty, with tropical fruit and sticky herbal notes. It’s very much a “Mid-Coast/Midwestern IPA” nose, which typically isn’t my thing, but here it works pretty well. On the palate, there’s plenty of toasty malt, which plays well with the strong dank, herbal-and-fruity hop notes. Tropical fruit, green herbs, and a light floral character on the finish and moderate bitterness. If you’re into Midwest-style IPAs (that lean a bit towards their West-Coast cousins), or if you love the Outsiders or memories of your angsty teenage years, give this beer a try while it’s here for a short time!
After all, “Things are rough all over”…so why not grab a beer and hang out with some of your favorite peeps (friends or family) this weekend?
